Matt. 5:4

Jesus teaches that those who mourn will be blessed and comforted.

What does it mean to mourn? Isn’t it backwards to think that sad people will be happy? What should Christians be mourning over?

We can go all the way back to the time of Job to see how people are often confused about how God treats His people, and what (if any) purpose suffering and sadness have. Jesus clears it up in this simple statement.

Matt. 5:3

We begin our discussion of the beattitudes with “Blessed are the poor in spirit.”

What does it mean to be “blessed?”

What is the difference between being poor or rich… does it always refer to money/material possessions?

What does God expect, in terms of attitude, of His people?

Matt. 5

As we begin to explore the volumes that Jesus teaches in a short section we call The Sermon on the Mount, we begin by defining a few important key words.

What is “Happy?”

What is “Joy?”

What is “Blessed?”

…and what is the difference?

With a clear understanding of what it is to be “blessed” we will begin to look at how Jesus tells us we can be blessed.
